FRENCH MOVIES. “Revoir Paris.” / “Only the Animals.” / “Nobody from Nowhere.”

“Revoir Paris” (2022, Tubi) French drama. About a woman who is struggling with the lingering mental health effects of having survived a terrorist attack in Paris. 


       This movie, as in most French work of the same dramatic vein, focuses on mass shooting survivor Mia's torment. Essayed by a restrained but involved Virginie Efira, we can't help but be part of her confusion, guilt and lostness. A very sensitive treatment sans dramatic bombast by writer-director Alice Winocour. 🎥💻📽


“Only the Animals” (2019, Tubi) French crime drama that tracks how the disappearance of a wealthy French housewife connects five desperate people across rural France and the Ivory Coast. 



       Smart, meticulous direction (by Dominik Moll) that expertly handled the multi-characters into a coordinated balancing act. Based on the novel “Seules les betes” by Colin Niel, the first few sequences can be a bit of a surreal puzzle but mysteries somewhat unravel as we flow and connect dots, without getting entangled in a yarn along the way. Questions still persist. (I guess the book may offer some answers.)

       And a remarkable ensemble performance. 🎥💻📽


“Nobody from Nowhere” (2014, Tubi) French psychological drama thriller. About a bored realtor leading a dull, empty life, who steals people's identities. 


       An odd but very interesting story, written by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière, and craftily handled by director Matthieu Delaporte. But on top of all that, it is Mathieu Kassovitz's masterful performance that lit up this movie. 🎥💻📽

“The Lost Bus” (2025, Apple TV+) survival drama film directed by Paul Greengrass , who co-wrote the screenplay with Brad Ingelsby .         This movie is based on a rescue detailed in a section of Lizzie Johnson's book “Paradise: One Town's Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire” about the 2018 Camp Fire , one of the most destructive wildfires in California history, which claimed 85 lives.        Mr Greengrass’ recreation of the disaster is terrifyingly authentic. It'd seem like the film's audience is actually there with the schoolchildren and their teachers and driver, inside the bus. SCIENCE FICTION: “The Gorge.” / “Foe.” / “In The Shadow of the Moon.” / “Under the Skin.”

“The Gorge” (2025, Apple TV) science fiction romantic action horror. Follows two elite snipers who are ordered to guard a deep gorge without knowing what lies inside.         Okay, what “lies inside” or down there are the Hollow Men or mutated human beings. They were originally scientists and soldiers from a post-World War II experiment, whose DNA has fused with the local plant and animal life due to a chemical leak and an earthquake. These terrifying, animalistic creatures are trapped in a purgatorial state between life and death, losing their humanity to become grotesque, immortal beings driven by primal aggression.         A reference to T.S. Eliot's poem "The Hollow Men," the backstory enthralls me. Mr Eliot described these lost souls as empty, spiritually vacant beings trapped in a meaningless, decaying existence. COMEDY: “Timestalker.” / “Drugstore June.” / “The Jesus Rolls.” / “Brave New Jersey.”

“Timestalker” (2024, Amazon Prime) British historical science fiction romantic comedy . Agnes falls in love with the wrong man and then gets reincarnated and falls in love with him over and over again, travelling through 1680s western Scotland, rural England in the 1790s, 1980s Manhattan , and a post- apocalyptic 22nd century.         A few sequences kind of worked but the entire movie is a dull, tired and ho-hum derivative of the usual sitcom obligatories. What shows promise is comedian Alice Lowe, who also directed from her own script. Try again next time? 🎥💻📽 “Drugstore June” (2024, PlutoTV) crime comedy. After the pharmacy in her small town is robbed, June, a wannabe influencer Gen-Z twenty-something girl who still lives at home with her parents, takes matters into her own hands to solve the crime.
