DISASTER MOVIES. “Greenland.” / “Greenland 2: Migration.”

“Greenland” (2020, Amazon Prime) disaster film. A family who must fight for survival as a planet-destroying comet races to Earth. Stars Gerard Butler. 


       Effects-smothered, comet hurtling to earth, people in gargantuan panic, and all that apocalypse cinema obligatories? Chaos, destruction, and torn-up families? Even a Gen Z has seen too much of these already (mostly with zombies) that they can easily lip-sync the dialogues. 

       But for some reason, with Gerard Butler's perpetually worried but reassuring face as center of this b-movie weekend couch ride, you may forgive the “here we go again!” smirk. Mr Butler makes a disaster movie less disastrous, so there's a sequel. Of course. 🎥💻📽


“Greenland 2: Migration” (2026, Amazon Prime) post-apocalyptic film. Sequel to “Greenland” (2020). The Garrity family leaves their failing underground bunker to trek across a ruined Europe chasing rumors of a flourishing safe haven.

 


       This sequel is a lot better than the original, which wasn't so bad. The wasteland production design is remarkable, the intermittent action sequences pumped up the restrained dramatic intensity. And of course Gerard Butler's solid and robust presence kept this dystopian thriller a compelling thrill. 🎥💻📽

“The Lost Bus” (2025, Apple TV+) survival drama film directed by Paul Greengrass , who co-wrote the screenplay with Brad Ingelsby .         This movie is based on a rescue detailed in a section of Lizzie Johnson's book “Paradise: One Town's Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire” about the 2018 Camp Fire , one of the most destructive wildfires in California history, which claimed 85 lives.        Mr Greengrass’ recreation of the disaster is terrifyingly authentic. It'd seem like the film's audience is actually there with the schoolchildren and their teachers and driver, inside the bus. SCIENCE FICTION: “The Gorge.” / “Foe.” / “In The Shadow of the Moon.” / “Under the Skin.”

“The Gorge” (2025, Apple TV) science fiction romantic action horror. Follows two elite snipers who are ordered to guard a deep gorge without knowing what lies inside.         Okay, what “lies inside” or down there are the Hollow Men or mutated human beings. They were originally scientists and soldiers from a post-World War II experiment, whose DNA has fused with the local plant and animal life due to a chemical leak and an earthquake. These terrifying, animalistic creatures are trapped in a purgatorial state between life and death, losing their humanity to become grotesque, immortal beings driven by primal aggression.         A reference to T.S. Eliot's poem "The Hollow Men," the backstory enthralls me. Mr Eliot described these lost souls as empty, spiritually vacant beings trapped in a meaningless, decaying existence. COMEDY: “Timestalker.” / “Drugstore June.” / “The Jesus Rolls.” / “Brave New Jersey.”

“Timestalker” (2024, Amazon Prime) British historical science fiction romantic comedy . Agnes falls in love with the wrong man and then gets reincarnated and falls in love with him over and over again, travelling through 1680s western Scotland, rural England in the 1790s, 1980s Manhattan , and a post- apocalyptic 22nd century.         A few sequences kind of worked but the entire movie is a dull, tired and ho-hum derivative of the usual sitcom obligatories. What shows promise is comedian Alice Lowe, who also directed from her own script. Try again next time? 🎥💻📽 “Drugstore June” (2024, PlutoTV) crime comedy. After the pharmacy in her small town is robbed, June, a wannabe influencer Gen-Z twenty-something girl who still lives at home with her parents, takes matters into her own hands to solve the crime. The film stars Esther Povitsky in her first starring role, who co-penned the script with the director Nicholaus Goossen.    ...
