COMEDY DRAMA. “The Roofman.” / “Other People.” / “Thelma.”
“Roofman” (2025, Apple+) crime film, based on the real-life spree robber Jeffrey Manchester, played by Channing Tatum, who hid out in a toy store after escaping from prison. Critics love this movie, basically due to Mr Tatum as their “eminently likable leading man.” But I ain't buying it. The true to life premise is already a magnet but Derek Cianfrance's direction lacked dramatic allure and overall thrill.
Yes, regardless of the kickass supporting cast: Kirsten Dunst, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Peter Dinklage, Ben Mendelsohn, Uzo Aduba, and Jimmy O. Yang. 🎥💻📽
“Other People” (2016, Hulu) comedy-drama. A struggling comedy writer goes home to Sacramento to take care of his mother Joanne, diagnosed with rare leiomyosarcoma.
Not saying that this movie, a debut effort by director Chris Kelly, is an awful movie. In fact, Molly Shannon and Jesse Plemons, as mom and son David and Joanne, deliver remarkable performances worthy of acting accolades. (Then lovable June Squibb is here, too.)
Funny, serious--but the kneading and squeezy treatment didn't save this film from melodramatic sappiness. And it bored me. 🎥💻📽
“Thelma” (2024, Hulu) comedy-drama film written, directed, and edited by Josh Margolin. A woman who falls victim to a phone scam, and sets out to find the perpetrators with the help of her grandson and a friend. Stars June Squibb.
This is June Squibb's stage. A perfect venue for her talent that is usually showcased without trying too much. June doesn't work hard to bring easy laughs in serious situations.
If you haven't yet, check out June Squibb in 2002's “About Schmidt” and 2013's “Nebraska.” 🎥💻📽
