“Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” (2025, Hulu) biographical musical drama, written and directed by Scott Cooper, and based on the 2023 book “Deliver Me from Nowhere” by Warren Zanes, as well as some elements from Mr Springsteen's 2016 autobiography “Born to Run.” The film chronicles Bruce's personal and professional struggles during the conception of his 1982 album “Nebraska.”
I first hesitated to watch this movie, quite honestly. Although I am a huge fan of Mr. Springsteen's earlier work (of course, clearly 1975's “Born to Run”) I am not into celebrities who spew their partisan political angst, especially on the center-stage. Left or Right. Wait. With the exception of Vanessa Redgrave and Martin Sheen.
But then, I read up. This movie's timeline is essentially the 1980s or before The Boss joyously rode the hate-Trump wagon. And “Nebraska” is my 2nd best Springsteen album. Plus, I wanna see the talented (humbly, not showy) Jeremy Allen White as Bruce. Or watch him sing, no lip-syncs.
“Deliver Me from Nowhere” though isn't one of the best autopic tropes that I've seen. Concentrating on Bruce Springsteen's emotional low in those years, this film is mostly redundantly brooding rather than rockin’ showtime, unlike the recent “A Complete Unknown,” with Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan.
The standout in this movie is Mr White and, as manager/record producer Jon Landau, Jeremy Strong's stellar performances. And at least Jeremy Allen White delivered a kickass “Born in the USA.” 🎥💻📽
