WINTER WARMTH is here… As Viento y Agua’s open mic emcee Aly Nighswonger greets one and all on a Tuesday evening, “Good morning!” It’s MORNING time in Southern California, forever. So—in between ruminations, protestations, and congratulations, spare yourselves a few hours to come out and get together for poetry and music.
[1] Nov 15, Sat, 7pm-9pm. Borders Bellflower, 2110 Bellflower Blvd, Long Beach, CA 90815. My “poetry reading group,” Nomads of 4th Street is doing an encore (following a well-attended show last Nov 1). This time, me and my “nomad poet-buddies” Daniel Romo & Mike James, read with other Long Beach and Orange County-based poets Sean Gunning, Janelle Shepard and Ben Lewis.
[2] Nov 18, Tues, 10am-9pm. California State University Long Beach, 6300 State University Drive, Long Beach. The Traveling Bonfires will be tabling at “Practicing Peace,” a peace festival hosted by the Center for Peace and Social Justice with the College of Liberal Arts. Contact person Alisha Herrick (
aherrick@csulb.edu): “On this day we are revitalizing the Peter Carr Peace Center which has been inactive for many years and establishing the new title of Center for Peace and Social Justice. This festival of music, performance, discussion, workshops, art, and celebration is going to be a wonderful opportunity for students to get involved in peace movements in our local community.”
[3] Nov 29, Sat, 7pm-9pm. THE LIBRARY, A Coffeehouse, 3418 E Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90803. Daniel Romo, Mike James and Pasckie Pascua (AKA, Nomads of 4th Street) share more poetry, with special guest Alyssandra Nighswonger.
[4] Dec 12, Fri, 8pm-10pm. Tribal Café, 1651 W Temple St., Los Angeles, CA 90026. The Traveling Bonfires’ “Vagrant Wind” global peace/anti-war advocacy continues at Echo Park/Westlake `hood. Performers: Eledar & Kymistry, Los Dugans, Nameless, Pasckie Pascua, and Uncultivated Rabbits. An art exhibition, with red wine, punctuates the night.
[5] Dec 13, Sat, 7pm-9pm. Borders Bellflower, 2110 Bellflower Blvd, Long Beach, CA 90815. The Nomads of 4th Street is back where they had their first gig Nov 1. With special guest Compacc.
[6] Dec 19, Fri, 7pm-10pm. Viento y Agua Café & Gallery, 4007 E 4th Street, Long Beach, CA. The Traveling Bonfires shares a gig with Nomads of 4th Street… Daniel, Mike and Pasckie read more poems with Leonard Baric, Agnieszka Burzuchowski, Nameless, Alyssandra Nighswonger, and Jumakae Yodraj.
[7] Starting Jan 22, 2009, 9pm-10:45pm, and every 4th Thursday of the month. Café Muse, 6547 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood CA 90038. Pasckie will be hosting this one, so let’s see how his mumblings and ramblings fare with the Hollywood crowd.
AS ALWAYS the case with these “rock journeys and sublime madnesses,” ALL SHOWS ARE FREE. But it’d be really cool if you could spare a few dollars donation and then obtain copies of the Nomads’ chapbooks and my own CD of past song compositions. These gifts are better than caffeine and nicotine combined…
